Step-by-Step: How to Make Beaded Earrings

Beaded earrings are one of the simplest and most rewarding DIY jewelry projects you can try. Whether you prefer clean, minimalist styles or bold statement pieces, making your own earrings lets you customize colors, shapes, and designs to suit any look. Best of all, you only need a few basic tools and a bit of creativity to begin.

What You’ll Need

Tools

  • Round-nose pliers

  • Flat-nose pliers

  • Wire cutters

Materials

  • Earring hooks (fishhooks or lever backs)

  • Headpins or eye pins

  • Beads of any type (glass, seed beads, gemstones, pearls, etc.)

  • Small jump rings (optional)

  • Spacer beads or charms (optional)

Step-by-Step: How to Make Beaded Earrings

1. Choose Your Design

Decide what style of earrings you’d like to create:

  • Simple single-bead drops

  • Multi-bead dangle earrings

  • Cluster designs using jump rings

  • Beaded hoops

Arrange your beads in the order you want to use them—this makes it easier to visualize the final look.

2. Thread the Beads onto a Headpin

Slide your chosen beads onto a headpin (a wire with a flat or decorative end).
Stack them in your planned order; placing the largest bead at the bottom and the smallest on top often creates a nicely balanced design.

3. Create a Wire Loop

Next, you’ll form a loop to connect the bead to the earring hook.

  • Hold the headpin just above the top bead with round-nose pliers.

  • Bend the wire into a 90-degree angle.

  • Use the pliers to curve the wire into a loop.

  • Trim off any extra wire with cutters.

Tip: For a more secure finish, wrap the remaining wire around the base of the loop to create a wrapped loop.

4. Attach the Earring Hook

Use flat-nose pliers to gently open the loop on the earring hook.
Slide your beaded charm onto the hook, then close it securely.
Repeat the process to make the second earring.
